1957 Corvette SS – Before the Corvette was an American icon General Motors built a factory sponsored Sports Car and entered this American Automobile in the 1957 Sebring International Raceway. By 1957 the Chevrolet Corvette was in danger of being discontinued and one obvious tactic to shore up the Corvette’s image and increase sales was to institute a racing program. The short lived Corvette SS began life as an experimental automobile with the initial goal of winning at Sebring endurance race March 23, 1957.

A team of engineers led by Zora Arkus-Duntov built the custom Corvette SS. Zora Arkus-Duntov was a former road racer from Europe. The SS featured a lightweight magnesium alloy body, tubular frame, independent front suspension, four link rear suspension and a four speed transmission. The 1957 Corvette SS was equipped with a 283 cubic inch fuel injected V8 that was rated at 307 horsepower.

Unfortunately success of the Corvette SS was not that good. It weighed only 1,700 pounds and could reach speeds of 183 MPH. However, a series of mechanical problems forced the SS out the Sebring 12 hour endurance race after 23 laps. The Corvette SS met little success as a racer. According to some reports the Corvette SS was renamed the Sting Ray and was developed into the Second generation C2 Corvette Sting Ray.
